Country Ranking for Technical Proficiency

The United Kingdom is ranked as the 25th most technically proficient country in Europe, according to a recent report by Coursera. This places the U.K. behind digital leaders like Germany, France, and Spain in the region.

On a global scale, the U.K. holds the 45th position out of 109 countries, showing improvement from the previous year’s 64th place. Despite significant investments in digital skills by the government, the current rank suggests a need for reassessment of ongoing efforts.

It is important to note that the U.K. does not represent the overall technical proficiency of Europe. Switzerland secured the top spot globally, with 17 European countries ranking in the top 25 positions. Germany, France, and Spain claimed 3rd, 5th, and 7th places, respectively.

The data for these findings were extracted from Coursera’s 2024 Global Skills Report, which incorporates information from more than 148 million online course learners worldwide, along with indicators like the Global Innovation Index, Labour Force Participation Rate, Human Capital Index, and GDP per capita.

U.K.’s Digital Skills Shortage

The U.K. is experiencing a high level of “skills-shortage vacancies” in the information and communications sector, where job positions remain unfilled due to a lack of requisite skills, qualifications, or experience among candidates. This percentage has risen significantly from 25% in 2017 to 43% in 2022.

Recognizing this digital skills shortage, the U.K. government has initiated several key investments over the past year to address the issue. These investments aim to enhance infrastructure, promote investment, and boost skills in technologies like quantum and AI.

Recent Investments in the U.K.’s Digital Skills

In response to the digital skills shortage, the U.K. government has allocated substantial funding towards training opportunities in digital industries. These investments include support for colleges and universities to expand their training programs and the funding of thousands of doctorates in engineering and physical sciences.

In addition to government initiatives, tech giant Microsoft has announced a multi-million pound investment to provide AI skills training to over a million individuals in the U.K. These efforts are expected to bridge the digital skills gap and promote growth in the AI sector.

Popular and In-demand Tech Skills in Europe

AI

The U.K. has witnessed a significant increase in enrollment for generative AI courses, reflecting a growing interest in technical roles like data analyst and software developer. The country is seeing a higher enrollment rate in machine learning algorithms and applied machine learning compared to global trends, indicating a strong focus on AI skills development.

Despite the rise in AI course popularity, cyber security remains a critical concern for U.K. businesses. Reports indicate that a large percentage of U.K. businesses are vulnerable to cyberattacks, highlighting the need for enhanced cybersecurity measures and skills development.

Cyber Security

While there is a growing demand for AI skills, enrollment in cybersecurity courses in Europe has declined. This trend is concerning given the increasing cybersecurity threats faced by businesses in the region. Experts emphasize the importance of equipping individuals with essential cyber skills through alternative credentialing mechanisms to address this gap.
